Sinaloa Cartel Co-founder Ismael Zambada Gets Life Sentence in US

The historic conviction marks the fall of one of the world’s last original drug lords, leaving the powerful Sinaloa Cartel facing a massive internal succession battle.

A court in the United States sent on Monday Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia, the 77-year-old co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, behind bars for the rest of his life without parole and ordered the forfeiture of his fortune worth $15 billion, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced.

The sentence, handed down by the U.S. District Judge Brian M. Cogan, follows Zambada’s guilty plea to racketeering and running a continuing criminal enterprise.

The ruling closes the book on a decades-long manhunt that ended with a dramatic arrest in July 2024. Zambada, who previously had a $15 million U.S. bounty on his head, was taken into custody near El Paso, Texas, after landing in a small aircraft alongside Joaquin Guzman Lopez, the son of fellow cartel co-founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The Mexican government stated at the time that it did not participate in the operation.

“Ismael Zambada Garcia spent nearly four decades poisoning American communities to make billions of dollars in profit and ordering the murders of anyone who stood in his way,” Joseph Nocella, Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in the DOJ statement. “Today, that chapter closes for good.”

Zambada’s criminal conduct encompassed decades of drug trafficking, money laundering, kidnapping, and murder. The DOJ highlighted that under his direction, the cartel recently expanded into mass fentanyl production, purchasing precursor chemicals from Chinese companies to manufacture the deadly synthetic opioid in Mexican laboratories.

To protect his billion-dollar empire, Zambada relied on brutal violence and systemic corruption. Prosecutors stated that he operated with impunity for decades by bribing Mexican government officials and law enforcement officers at the highest levels, ensuring his drug shipments flowed securely across the border.

Zambada’s sentencing marks the fall of one of the last major contemporary drug lords, having outlasted rivals from the Arrellano-Felix and Guadalajara cartels. Following the 2016 capture of El Chapo, Zambada further consolidated his individual power over the Sinaloa Cartel.
