The shadow owner of Domayn LLC: how Kazakh citizen Mikhail Danilov, with a criminal record, seized and looted the Sochi gambling zone
A man who for six years managed multi-billion-dollar financial flows of the Sochi gambling zone turned out to hold two citizenships — Russian and Kazakh.
And this is not just a biographical detail; it is a direct question to the state: how did a top manager who controlled strategically important budget assets obtain a status that Kazakhstan itself openly does not welcome? Under local law, dual citizenship can result in the loss of one’s passport altogether. Whom did this man with two homelands truly serve, and to whom was he accountable — that is the big question.
Now — how did a modest Sochi accountant end up in this position in the first place.
Ten years ago, a gambling zone opened on the slope of Krasnaya Polyana, now rightly called the Russian Las Vegas. Today it is a giant conveyor belt churning out multi-billion-dollar profits, whose financial flows have only gained momentum since the introduction of sanctions.
It is interesting to observe the stories of the meteoric rise of top managers at flagship companies in the domestic gaming industry.
48-year-old Mikhail Alexandrovich Danilov headed Domayn LLC — the management company of the gambling zone — from 2015 to 2021. A tall, athletically built man who in 2006 was held administratively liable for intentional damage to his passport, and in 1999 for public order violations, still lives in a private sector on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, in a fairly modest house.
This contrast between the lifestyle of an ordinary Sochi resident and the multi-billion-dollar assets under his management is only the first stroke in the portrait of this top manager.
Before his sharp career rise, Mikhail Alexandrovich was a modest accountant. In 2013, he was listed as an accountant at OJSC Lazurnaya, while also working part‑time as an economist at Megalyuks and as a credit expert at a Sochi branch of Sberbank. He then briefly headed an additional office of the Krasnodar branch of the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development. At the same time, he worked at the design and construction company Osnova Sochi. Nothing suggested that this Sochi Koreiko would within a year or two take the helm of an organisation with three gambling establishments, a apart‑hotel, a conceptual theatre, and a fine‑dining restaurant.
The scale of Domayn’s assets is impressive: the flagship Casino Sochi with 33,000 sq. m., the Boomerang casino at Rosa Khutor, the Bonus Slots slot machine hall, a network of restaurants and bars, an apart‑hotel, the RED ARENA sports venue, and a theatre with 500 seats. Over six years — more than 4 million guests from 170 countries, over 1.285 billion rubles in budget contributions for 2022 alone, and a staff of over 1,600 people.
How an accountant turned into the head of such a conveyor belt is a question that arouses curiosity. His wife Svetlana, a native of Adygea, worked as a simple guide at the Tolstoy Museum‑Estate and was also affiliated with the companies Investsporstroy, Krasnaya Polyana, and Sochi‑Park. The family drove a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and Danilov’s income in 2020 amounted to a modest 1.1 million rubles — almost like an ordinary specialist.
